First: skip the smoke bombs, fireworks and anything that explodes

Do not use pyrotechnics. Smoke-generating reveal devices and exploding targets have started wildfires at gender reveal parties, and homemade and store-bought reveal devices have injured and killed people, including guests standing nearby and a firefighter on one of those fires. Smoke bombs, fireworks, fused powder cannons and sky lanterns carry the same kind of risk. The colored smoke looks good for about four seconds. The consequences can last a great deal longer.

The rules are short. No fuse, no flame, no ignition. Keep colored powder away from grills, candles and cigarettes, and away from guests with asthma. Do not release balloons outdoors, do not dye ponds or creeks, and keep cars and burnouts out of it. Every reveal below works in a living room.

Gender reveal ideas: 18 safe ways to reveal

Whatever the method, the parents should not set it up. Ask the clinic to write the result on a card and seal it, hand it unopened to one trusted person, and let that person deal with the baker, the balloon shop or the box.

  1. Cut-cake reveal: Neutral frosting outside, colored sponge layers inside. Ask for colored layers rather than just a colored filling, because a thin center can hide in the first slice. Cut a deep wedge with a long knife, and put the photographer opposite the knife.
  2. Balloon box: A large gift box, about two feet square, holding eight to twelve helium balloons in the color, taped shut by whoever filled it. The parents lift the lid together. Tie the ribbons to a weight inside so nothing drifts off afterward.
  3. Paper confetti cannon: Spring-loaded or compressed-air cannons with no fuse, filled with tissue-paper confetti rather than plastic or glitter. Check the packaging says no ignition, aim up and away from faces, and sweep up afterward.
  4. Envelope read by a friend: The simplest reveal there is. The person holding the card stands up at dinner and reads it out. It photographs well because everyone is watching the parents' faces, not a cloud.
  5. Cupcakes for everyone: Every guest gets a cupcake with colored filling and bites on a count of three, so the whole room has the reveal at once. Order an extra dozen; people want a second.
  6. Pull-string piñata: Filled with candy and paper confetti in the color. Use pull strings instead of a bat, so nobody swings anything near a pregnant parent or a crowd of children.
  7. Giant balloon pop: A 36-inch opaque balloon filled with paper confetti, popped with a pin by the partner. Warn guests about the bang, and keep it away from anyone with a latex allergy.
  8. Lights out, color on: Turn off the lights, count down from ten, and have the friend switch smart bulbs or colored string lights to the answer. It is the best indoor stand-in for colored smoke, and it looks great on video.
  9. Scratch-off cards: Every guest gets a printed scratch card and everyone scratches at once. Order or print them two weeks ahead.
  10. Puzzle reveal: Each guest gets one piece of a jigsaw, and the room assembles it on the table to spell out the answer. Use 20 to 30 large pieces so it takes minutes, not an hour.
  11. Pumpkin reveal: In autumn, hollow out a pumpkin, fill it with colored candy or paper, and let the parents lift the lid. No candle inside, for reasons this page has covered.
  12. Big sibling delivery: An older child carries in a sealed box, or unzips a hoodie to show a colored T-shirt. Only if the child is keen; a reluctant four-year-old will refuse on camera.
  13. Dog bandana: A friend ties a colored bandana on the dog out of sight and lets it trot back in. The dog has no idea it is doing anything important, which is most of the charm.
  14. Balloon drop: A net of balloons in the color strung across the ceiling and released with a pull cord. Indoors only, and children will be under it in seconds.
  15. Custom fortune cookies: One cookie per guest with the answer printed on the slip. Most bakers need a week or two of lead time.
  16. Nesting boxes: Five boxes, each inside the next, with a tiny pair of socks in the color at the center. The unwrapping builds suspense for about a minute without any props beyond tape.
  17. Paint pour: The friend fills two opaque cups with water-based paint in the color, and the parents pour them together over a blank canvas. You end up with a piece of art for the nursery wall.
  18. Video call reveal: For family far away, run any of the above on a call, and give one person in the room the job of holding the phone steady at eye level.

Simple and low-key gender reveal ideas

Not everyone wants a party, and nobody needs one. The quietest versions: open the envelope over dinner with the grandparents; send the group chat a photo of a small cake with one slice cut out; or post a tiny pair of shoes in the color. If the parents have decided not to find out, or to keep it private, let a baby shower do the celebrating instead. Keep the tone light either way, because scans are occasionally misread.

Gender reveal games: guess and vote

The reveal takes seconds, so the games give the afternoon its shape. Run them before the reveal; nobody wants to guess after the answer is out.

Gender reveal food

Reveal parties are usually afternoon affairs, so serve food that holds at room temperature: five or six savory bites and two sweet ones per guest over two hours. The food quantity calculator handles bigger crowds.

Label allergens, and ask what the pregnant parent is avoiding. More in finger food ideas.

How to plan a gender reveal party

Most reveals happen after the mid-pregnancy anatomy scan, or earlier if a blood test has already given the answer. Invite 15 to 30 people, keep it to two hours, and budget roughly $100 to $300 at home, most of it on food and the reveal itself. Children are welcome; give them the balloon drop or the confetti.

  1. 0:00: Arrivals and the arrival vote.
  2. 0:20: Food out.
  3. 0:50: Games: the old wives' tales quiz and prediction cards.
  4. 1:15: The reveal. Put it here rather than at the start, so latecomers do not miss it.
  5. 1:20: Dessert, photos and the vote count.
  6. 2:00: End.

Assign one person to film in landscape and another to take photos, so the parents can hold each other rather than their phones. If you would rather fold the reveal into one bigger celebration, make it the centerpiece of the baby shower, after food and before gifts. The printable kits include an RSVP tracker and a shopping list.

Gender reveal questions

What are some safe gender reveal ideas?

Choose reveals with no fuse, flame or explosive: a cake with colored sponge inside, a box of helium balloons, filled cupcakes everyone bites at once, a paper confetti cannon, a pull-string piñata, colored lights switched on in a dark room, or an envelope read aloud by a friend. All of them work indoors.

Why shouldn't you use smoke bombs or fireworks for a gender reveal?

Pyrotechnic smoke devices and exploding targets have started wildfires at gender reveal parties, and reveal devices have injured and killed people. Dry grass, wind and a crowd standing close by make any fuse or explosive dangerous, and fireworks are restricted or illegal in many places. A cake, a balloon box or a confetti cannon gives the same moment without the risk.

When should you have a gender reveal party?

Usually after the mid-pregnancy anatomy scan, or earlier if a prenatal blood test has already given the answer. Hold it within a few weeks of finding out, before the secret leaks, on a weekend afternoon. Two hours is enough, with the reveal about 75 minutes in.

Who should know the baby's sex before a gender reveal?

One trusted person. Ask the clinic to write the result on a card and seal it, then hand the envelope unopened to a friend or relative who organizes the cake, balloons or box. The parents stay in the dark until the reveal, and nobody else needs to know.

What food do you serve at a gender reveal party?

Finger food and a two-color dessert table, half pink and half blue, so guests vote with what they eat. Add a grazing board with pasteurized cheeses, sliders or a taco bar, and cupcakes with colored filling. Label allergens and check what the pregnant parent is avoiding.

Can you combine a gender reveal with a baby shower?

Yes, and it saves hosting twice. Plan the shower as normal and make the reveal its centerpiece about halfway through, after food and before gifts. A cut cake or a balloon box works best, because the whole room can see it at once.
